Some days remind me of my old blue English bike.
It was a secondhand bike but I liked it from the start.
My very own
Just for me bike.
I could imagine myself riding it all over the Kansas City suburb.
Or well
at least up my street.
I washed my bike
carefully dried it till it shone
and then hopped on it for a ride.
Now where we lived it was hilly.
Wherever you wanted to go there were hills to climb
up and down.
In front of our house the short street was perfect for riding a bike.
So I grabbed my bike and pedaled up the hill
preparing for a nice ride down.
Sometimes I would have a the ride I imagined
Wind blowing my hair
Free as a bird
But other times it was just the opposite.
The chain of the bike would fall off
and try as I might I couldn’t get that thing on.
All I could do was walk the bike all the way home
where my Dad would fix it for me.
This happened so many times that just looking at my bike
I began to wonder.
Would it work today?
Or would I end up walking it all the way home?
Bother.
It looked like such a great bike
but it was undependable.
You just never knew.
It wasn’t until years later that I finally got a new bike that worked as well as it looked.
Life is a lot like riding that old English bike.
Some days things just seem to go smoothly.
One moment unfolding to another.
Things going just the way we had planned.
But other times
the unexpected happens
leaving us having to scrap plan A and resorting to plan B.
Again and again I find myself going to God and giving Him all the broken pieces.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding..”
It’s all too easy to think that we know best.
that our way is His Way.
But He calls us to let Him lead.
To surrender our plans, our desires, our ways into His Loving Hands.
The marvelous thing I am learning
is that when we turn it all over to Him from the beginning
there are no mistakes.
If something doesn’t work out the way we thought,
We can trust Him. All is in His Control.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.”
(Proverbs 3:5, 6)
His Way/ Our Way
His Thoughts becoming our thoughts.
His desires transforming our desires.
A new bike.
A smooth ride. Peace. Satisfaction. Contentment.
Come thou Fount of every blessing
tune my heart…
this heart that tends to want things her way..
to sing Thy Praise.
Continually.
Praise defeats fear.
Praise fights off discouragement.
Praise Him again and again, friends. He is Worthy of all our praise.
